About the Society

The German Society of Montreal (DGM) was founded in 1835 to help immigrants from Germany and German-speaking Europe to settle in Montreal.

Since then, the Society’s activities have evolved: today, the German Society is an important charitable organisation in the greater Montreal area, supporting many causes (e.g. Old Brewery Mission, Dans La Rue, Generations Foundation, Alexander von Humboldt German International School) in addition to the German language and culture.

Mission

The German Society of Montreal was founded in 1835 to unite the members of the German community and to promote its cultural, charitable, and educational interests.

#1

To assist needy persons, regardless of their cultural or ethnic background.

#2

To support German cultural institutions and initiatives and to support projects of other Canadian charitable organizations and social agencies in the Greater Montreal whose objectives are such that participation or contributions by the Society would be considered a meaningful extension of the Society’s own work.

#3

To keep alive the German language and cultural heritage in Montreal and be supportive of efforts to enhance the knowledge and appreciation of German in its diversity.
